How Fecal Transfusion is Done
Fecal transfusion is similar to an organ transplant, but instead of a solid organ being transplanted, a healthy biomass is being transfused from one patient into another.
In the early days, when doctors first did fecal transfusion, they usually obtained stool from a healthy spouse to transplant into the other spouse with the problem. The rationale was that spouses already share any communicable diseases, therefore there would be little or no danger of transfusing diseases along with the stool.
The more modern way of doing fecal transfusion is to get healthy donors to donate stool, and then have the donors screened for communicable diseases, just like organ donors are screened before giving a kidney, a liver, or a heart.
The healthy biomass is processed. Usually fluid and nutrients are added. Then it can be infused as an enema, or with a colonoscope, or by a tube placed down the nose and into the intestines.
