Human Feces
What is the largest organ in the human body? It can be argued that the flora of microbes that lives inside our large and small intestines is the largest organ of the human body.
One author writes that the fecal flora contains "nine times more living cells than does the entire body." (Borody TJ: Editorial on "Flora Power" - Fecal Bacteria Cure Chronic C. difficile Diarrhea. American Journal of Gastroenterology. November 2000. Volume 95. Number 11. Pages 3028-3029.
The "fecal organ" has to have a huge impact upon our health. Beneficial bacteria keep us healthy by producing needed vitamins and nutrients, while harmful bacteria upset our stomachs and intestines, and produce toxins that harm us.
What is important is that the fecal flora can be studied with modern microbial techniques, and when problems are identified, the fecal flora can be transplanted, just like other organs can be transplanted. First, careful screening is done, the same as before any other organ transplant. Then, a healthy fecal flora is transplanted, or transfused, into someone with "sick fecal flora," after they have been prepped with antibiotics or enemas, or whatever is felt to be needed to make the transplant a success.
