Constipation and Fecal Transfusion
Chronic constipation is a troubling condition that often leaves patients using laxatives, drinking large amounts of warm water, or taking enemas for relief. People with chronic constipation often also suffer bloating, abdominal pain, and heartburn.
One theory, is that chronic constipation is due to abnormal bowel flora. The theory is that when our bowl is lined with beneficial bacteria, our bowls function normally and regularly. However, when our bowel is lined with "bad flora," constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, or diarrhea may result.
It may not be the bacteria itself that causes the constipation, but rather a toxin that a certain bacteria produces, which paralyzes, or interferes with normal bowel function. The bowel may be slowed down by such a toxin.
Thus the theory goes, one way to cure chronic constipation is to change the flora of the bowel. This may be done by fecal transfusion. First, the bowel may need to be prepped by antibiotics and laxatives, followed by the fecal transfusion with normal healthy bacteria.
